DESCRIPTION:\nTCOLE 1849\, De-escalation course improves officers’ respon
se to incidents involving people in crisis who are behaving erratically. I
t emphasizes public and officer safety while teaching tactical de-escalati
on to reduce the intensity of an encounter with a suspect. The training en
ables officers with additional options for voluntary compliance and to mit
igate the need for a higher level of force while they maintain control of
the situation.\n\nMandated with the passage of the Sandra Bland Act (SB 18
 49) by the Texas Legislature in 2017\, officers with only a basic proficie
ncy certificate are now required to obtain 8-hours of TCOLE approved de-es
calation training every 48-months. This course is required for officers se
eking to obtain either an Intermediate or Advanced certificate. It also is
required to be taken in person for out of state officers needing a Texas
 Peace Officer’s license.
