DESCRIPTION:\nMRDS refers to the training and standards set by the Texas Co
mmission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) for peace officers carrying firearms e
quipped with a Miniaturized Red Dot System (MRDS). The use of these optica
l sights on duty pistols is authorized only after an officer has completed
  a TCOLE-approved course.\n\nRequirements for carrying an MRDS:\n\nWhile s
pecific course standards are determined by TCOLE\, Hutto Police Department
policy outlines requirements and expectations\, which are consistent with
TCOLE rules.\n\n- TCOLE-approved course: Officers must successfully compl
ete a TCOLE-approved training course specifically for the use of a duty pi
stol MRDS.\n- Demonstrated proficiency: Officers must be able to show prof
iciency with both the MRDS and the weapon's backup iron sights during pist
ol qualification courses.\n- Approved firearm: Only factory pistols design
ed to accept pistol-mounted optics are authorized for duty. Aftermarket mi
lling of slides is prohibited.\n- Approved MRDS models: Officers may only
use specific manufacturer/model MRDS sighting systems that have been appro
ved for duty.\n- Backup iron sights: The duty pistol must be equipped with
backup iron sights that can be used in the event of an optic or battery f
ailure.\n\nRed dot systems are becoming more common in law enforcement\, a
nd training ensures officers can effectively use and transition between si
ghting systems under various conditions. Training covers not only marksman
ship but also troubleshooting potential equipment failures in the field. T
he training requirement ensures that officers can maintain a high standard
of firearm proficiency while using new technology\, upholding the safety
and effectiveness standards mandated by TCOLE.
